Why did the police accompany the paramedics?

ok,this happened a little while ago (1 year ago); but has always been on my mind. one day,my wife had an epileptic seizure/panic attack,and i had no choice but to call 9-1-1. because nothing i was doing was alleviating the problem. it made me scared to see her like that. fortunately her seizures are "petit-mal" seizures,and not "grand-mal". anyway,bact to the question- why did the police also show up? i'm talking 3 squad cars arrived; no joke{3}. i am not upset or complaining either.it's just a simple question. i imagined it was to provide the first responders and ambulance personnel with an escort throught traffic (maybe, i don't really know). that's why i'm asking. so if anyone,prefferably police,fire-rescue, or ambulance medical personnel,knows the answer,please feel free to share your imput.
